A young woman is fighting for her life after a stabbing near a peace garden in north London.

Officers were called to Elthorne Park in Islington shortly before 9pm on Monday, where a woman in her 20s was found with stab wounds.

She was treated at the scene by paramedics from the London Ambulance Service before being taken to hospital, where she remains in a critical condition.

On Tuesday, a man in his 20s was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. He remains in police custody.

A woman in her 50s was also arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender and remains in police custody.

Officers have confirmed the suspect and victim were known to each other.

It comes just nine days after a stabbing less than 500 metres away in Sunnyside Road, where a man was left with life-changing injuries.

Metropolitan Police said there would be an increased presence of officers in the area while investigations continued.

Chief Superintendent Jason Stewart said: “The arrest of the suspect marks a significant stage in our investigation.

“Though a man is in custody, we do understand that this incident has caused extreme concern in the community and we would like to reassure the public there will be extra officers in the area over the next few days as enquiries

“As our investigation is still ongoing we’d urge anyone with any information or who may have been a witness to please contact us on 101 or online, quoting CAD7669/03NOV. The smallest bit of information could make a real difference.”
